The origin of a project to promote accessible tourism in Cuba<\/h2>\n\n

It was in Barcelona, on a morning in May 2018, when I had my first meeting with Jordi Ballbe, president of Skedio Group. I still remember his words: <\/p>\n\n

“We want Cuba to be a destination that everyone can travel to, including people with disabilities or reduced mobility.”<\/p>\n\n

After more than thirty years working for accessible and inclusive tourism, I have rarely encountered someone with such a clear vision: to put people first and use tourism as a tool to build a fairer world.<\/p>\n\n

The commitment to an inclusive destination<\/h2>\n\n

From that moment on, Enjoy Travel Group<\/a>, together with the Ministry of Tourism of Cuba and ECOTUR, assumed the objective of turning Cuba into a tourist destination open to all.<\/p>\n\n

This commitment was consolidated with the celebration of the IV Ibero-American Summit on Accessible Tourism in December 2021 in Havana<\/strong>, where the Declaration of Havana “For Accessible Tourism in Ibero-America”<\/strong> was signed, currently supported by twelve countries.<\/p>\n\n

The process was also supported by the Cuban tourism sector, Cuban Medical Services, universities, public administrations and associations of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n

Training, awareness and joint work<\/h2>\n\n

The road to accessible tourism has been marked by years of work:<\/p>\n\n

  • training sessions for tourism professionals<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • awareness-raising campaigns<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • evaluation of hotel establishments and extra-hotel offerings<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • meetings with the country’s tourism management officials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    Juan Carlos Garc\u00eda Granda<\/strong>, Minister of Tourism, was one of the driving forces behind this process, as was the collaboration with Cuban associations of people with disabilities such as ACLIFIM, ANSOC and ANCI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

    The arrival of the first group of tourists with disabilities<\/h2>\n\n

    In January 2023, the first organized group of tourists with physical disabilities arrived at Havana’s Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed Airport as part of the Accessible Tourism – Tourism for All<\/strong> segment.<\/p>\n\n

    Although some travelers arrived with uncertainty about the accessibility of the destination, they soon found that many of their concerns were unfounded:<\/p>\n\n

    • specialized assistance<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • hotels with rooms adapted to international standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
